The Many Complications Surrounding Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is the most effective weight loss surgery available, but the potential complications associated this people have caused people to question it in recent years. People who have already had this surgery may be experiencing a number of different complications that will likely be present for the rest of their lives.

Gastric bypass surgery is a surgery in which the stomach is divided into two parts and a large section of the intestines is completely removed and rearranged. It is a very invasive procedure and the complications have the potential to affect patients for decades after surgery.

Complications from gastric range from relatively benign to life threatening. Some of the most common complications include:

• Internal bleeding which is caused by the suturing of the intestinal tract and the stomach--the blood usually accumulates around the intestines, uterus or esophagus and can lead to organ failure or death.

• Serious infection of the lower stomach area where the surgery was performed or of the intestines.

• Frequent gallstones or gall bladder infections

• Gastritis--this is the inflammation of the lining of the stomach

• Frequent nausea and vomiting

• Severe anemia caused by iron or vitamin B12 deficiencies

• Osteoporosis caused by calcium deficiencies

• Dumping syndrome--this is the syndrome that presents in the form of chest cramps, abdominal cramps, sweating, diarrhea and nausea. It usually occurs after the patient eats food with high fat and sugar contents.

• Nutritional deficiencies--it is difficult for gastric patients to get all of the vitamins and minerals they need to remain healthy.

Despite the efficacy of gastric bypass surgery for weight loss, this procedure does pose serious threats.
